The 9th European Parliament-Jordan Parliament inter-parliamentary meeting (IPM) and working visit to Jordan was held on 4 November 2021.
Three MEPs, including DMAS Chair Isabel Santos, participated. The delegation met with the highest level of representation of the Jordanian government and the National Assembly: HRH Prince Faisal bin Hussein on behalf of HM King Abdullah II, HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal, Foreign Minister H.E. Ayman Safadi, President of the Senate H.E. Faisal Al-Fayez and members of the EU-Jordanian Senate Friendship Committee, and Speaker of the House of Representatives H.E. Abdelrahman Al-Awdat. The delegation also met with members of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System, civil society representatives and EU Visitor Programme (EUVP) alumni.
The delegation had productive conversations with the various interlocutors regarding the proposed new electoral laws and accompanying constitutional changes (following the recommendations of the Royal Committee for Modernising the Political System), as well as on Jordan's role in the region and relations with neighbouring countries. It was clear from the delegation's meetings that Jordan is going through a period of national reflection to decide on its future path. It plays an important role in the region and could become a leading example of Arab democracy if the Royal Committee's recommendations are implemented. There is a clear momentum for change in Jordan, but it must deliver on the aspirations of the Jordanian people: improved economic opportunities, true freedom of assembly and speech, equal rights, political participation, accountable political representation, among others.
