The Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries, Isabel SANTOS (S&D, PT), said:

"In my capacity as Chair of the Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries (DMAS) of the European Parliament, and on behalf of all my DMAS colleagues, I would like to extend our most sincere congratulations for the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

That past century has been a challenging and momentous one, for the world in general and for the Middle East in particular. It is remarkable that Jordan has managed to navigate the numerous challenges it faced and appears, nowadays, as an example of stability and moderation in a troubled region. Jordan is today a safe haven for scores and scores of refugees from Palestine, Iraq and Syria. The stabilizing role of Jordan, under the rule of King Abdullah II, is a tribute to our common humanity and an important contribution to peace and stability in the whole Middle East and to our own European neighbourhood. In this respect, I salute the partnership between EU and Jordan in the defence of multilateralism and international law, notably in the context of the Middle East Peace Process.

Our Delegation will continue to engage in constant and fruitful dialogue with Jordan, starting with our counterparts from the House of Representatives and from the Senate. The European Parliament will continue to support whole-heartedly the social, economic and democratic reforms of Jordan, which aim to build a stable, prosperous, pluralistic and inclusive country for all its citizens."
